Tasty Dhal Recipe


A full-flavoured and filling Indian dish that goes great with plain yogourt or rice.

Ingredients

200gyellow (or orange) lentils, skinned and split
1 inchfresh ginger, peeled and cut into thin strips powder
salt, to taste
½ tspcoriander powder
900mLwater
2 clovesgarlic, peeled and cut into five large pieces
3green chilis, left whole (optional)
 ¾ tspturmeric
½ cantomatoes
1½ tbspbutter (or vegetable oil)
½ tspgaram masala
1 tspground cumin  

Preparation

  1. Place the lentils, water, ginger, garlic, tumeric and chillies in a pan, bring to a boil, then simmer over a moderate heat for 10 minutes.
  2. Stir in the tomatoes and cook for a further 20 minutes.
  3. Add salt and cook for another 10 minutes or so, until the lentils have started to break down and the curry comes together.
  4. Meanwhile, heat the butter or oil in a small pan. Add the cumin, coriander and garam masala and fry for 2 mins, stirring frequently.
  5. Pour the mixture into the pan of lentils. Throw in some fresh coriander. Cook for another minute.
  6. Serve on a bed of Basmati rice with plain yoghurt.
